The University of Bologna has been included in the new ranking of Italian universities, based on their quality, published by “Il Sole 24 Ore.” It was awarded first place amongst the Mega Universities in the “right to education” category, third place for research and fourth in the overall standings thereby confirming it as a peak of excellence in Italy. The rankings have been prepared following a new approach based on a wider set of factors that, taken individually, offer a richer and more varied framework than in the past. The report published by the newspaper includes three different lists: one of which is constructed on the basis of the nine indicators of teaching and another by the three indicators of research, and the general overall, the result of the average scores obtained by each university in first two charts. In all three of the University of Bologna always appears in leading positions, distinguishing itself amongst others such as the University of Verona, Trento and Politecnico di Milano. Bologna is, in fact, the leader in the ranking based on the new parameter “right to education”, which indicates the proportion of students defined as “suitable” for a scholarship that are then given practical help. As regards, however, the field of research, measured through key parameters related to the quality of higher education, research products, and the ability of universities to attract external resources for their projects, the Alma Mater of Bologna ranks in third place. Good performances are also achieved in the rankings formed on the basis of other parameters, such as the “dispersion” or economic resources, which contribute to make gains for Bologna and fourth place in the overall ranking of the universities with the highest quality standards of the country.
