Master in Sustainability Transition Management: a year of training combining theory and practice

17 January 2025

The Master in Sustainability Transition Management at Bologna Business School concluded its academic year with the presentation of the final project works. This concluding moment marked the culmination of a program that alternated online teaching with hands-on field experiences, offering participants a practical and innovative approach to sustainable transition.

A curriculum enriched by On-Campus Weeks

The On-Campus Weeks were pivotal moments of the Master, allowing participants to immerse themselves in practical experiences that complemented their theoretical education with company visits and experiential activities.

In April 2024, the first On-Campus Week brought together students from the two versions of the Master—Executive, designed for professionals, and Professional, aimed at recent graduates. During this week, participants explored topics related to urban and agricultural transitions. Guided by Professors Orla Lenihan (University of Galway) and Matteo Mura (BBS), they visited the Urban Innovation Lab in Bologna and companies such as Eta Beta and 16Lab, delving into cutting-edge contexts and experiencing interactive, hands-on learning.

The second On-Campus Week, held in October 2024, was exclusively for Professional Master students. This session provided an in-depth look at sustainable management in business settings through company visits to organizations such as Unipol, Schneider Electric, and Cartiera di Lama di Reno. These encounters offered students the opportunity to gain deeper insights into the challenges and opportunities companies face in transitioning to more sustainable models.

Project work: sustainability in practice

The final project work presentations allowed participants to demonstrate how the knowledge acquired throughout the year was applied to tackle real-world problems. Developed in collaboration with partner companies, these projects provided innovative and tangible solutions to operational challenges linked to sustainability.

A program that makes a difference

In his concluding remarks during the presentation of the Master’s Project Work, Director Matteo Mura emphasized the value of the proposed projects and the dedication of a class that gave its all throughout the program:
“It was truly a pleasure to have all of you in this class. Managing a group like yours was easy—you are truly capable professionals. A master like this, lasting a year and delivered in a hybrid format, is a challenge for both you and us. However, your positive attitude and willingness to engage greatly helped us.”

The Master in Sustainability Transition Management continues to stand out as an excellent educational program for those aiming to lead change in a world increasingly focused on sustainability. Thanks to a unique blend of theory and practice, participants have gained the tools to become key players in shaping the future of sustainability.
