Green Jobs: Work and Sustainability, Which Professions?

10 March 2025

In recent years, growing focus on sustainability issues has given rise to a new category of occupations: “green jobs,” which are professions that positively contribute to environmental protection, sustainable management of natural resources, and the fight against climate change.
These roles not only support sustainable development policies but are becoming increasingly central to the global economy. From the renewable energy sector to waste management, including sustainable building design, green opportunities are growing rapidly and are highly diversified.

What are the job opportunities related to sustainability?

Job opportunities in the “green world” are constantly expanding and cover a wide range of sectors.
In general, green jobs can be divided into categories, each with specific skills and functions. Some of the main areas include:
Renewable Energy: jobs related to the design, installation, and maintenance of solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass plants, which increasingly require specialized engineers and technicians.
Energy Efficiency and Green Building: design of energy-efficient building with low environmental impact.
Waste Management and Circular Economy: professions related to recycling and managing industrial and urban waste.
Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management: roles related to the sustainable management of natural resources, such as agronomists and environmental biologists.
Sustainable Finance: positions that integrate sustainability principles into financial practices, such as ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) consultants or green bond experts.
Scientific Professions: roles focused on developing new technological and biotechnological solutions to reduce environmental impact.

Careers in the large sustainability-related business sector range from technical roles, such as green architects, energy managers, and climate change analysts, to managerial positions requiring a holistic and open-minded approach, such as sustainable managers, who are dedicated to guiding companies toward change and sustainability.

To pursue a career in this area, education is necessary, which could follow a technical path (engineering, architecture, economics) or be directly focused on environmental sciences. This should be complemented by postgraduate courses that guarantee specific skills and facilitate entry into the workforce.
