Global MBA participants visit SIGEP

23 January 2025

The participants of the Global MBA at Bologna Business School took part in a visit to SIGEP, the leading trade fair for foodservice and gelato, with the aim of exploring technological innovations and delving into sustainability topics.

A highlight of the day was the talk by Alessandro Pastore, professor at Bologna Business School and co-founder of Camfridge Ltd., held in the Sustainability District. Titled The Future of Refrigeration: how innovation can reduce costs and carbon footprint, the talk addressed a pressing issue: the environmental impact of traditional refrigeration technologies.

As Pastore explained, cooling systems based on vapor-compression technology, developed 140 years ago, account for up to 10% of global CO2 emissions, surpassing the combined emissions of the aviation and maritime sectors. Moreover, these systems consume 17% of global electricity, with growth rates three times faster than other technologies.

The talk highlighted the potential of “solid-state” technologies, which eliminate the use of refrigerant gases and present a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional systems. These innovations not only reduce environmental impact but also offer cost-effective solutions for various industrial sectors.

Participation in events like SIGEP reflects Bologna Business School’s commitment to providing its students with hands-on, multidisciplinary experiences, preparing them to become leaders capable of addressing the most pressing global challenges, with sustainability at the forefront.
