Associate Professor Toulouse Business School

Andrea Mantovani is Associate Professor at Toulouse Business School. He is the head of the MSc in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management, and Academic Director of International Relations. He is also Associate Member at the Toulouse School of Economics. He received his PhD in Economics from CORE, Université Catholique de Louvain. He spent many years in Barcelona as a post-doc researcher (IESE Business School) and as an adjoint professor (Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona). He was also a visiting scholar at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. His main research focus is in industrial economics, specifically in the areas of digital economy, managerial economics, competition policy and regulation, and economics of innovation. He collaborates with Microsoft on issues related to cloud computing. He has published in leading top journals such as Management Science, Journal of the European Economic Association, Strategy Science, European Economic Review, Games and Economic Behavior, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, and Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.



The digitization of the economy is one of the most relevant issues of our time. The objective of this course is to analyze how digital economy has fundamentally challenged traditional business models and created new business opportunities. We will start with a brief introduction of the digital economy and then analyze the specific business strategies adopted by the different players in this ecosystem, specifically platforms. We will also discuss the implications for public policy and regulation. In particular, we will consider whether new business practices and contracts in the digital economy are beneficial or detrimental to society. Real case studies related to Amazon, Airbnb,, Facebook, Google, Uber, and others, will be analyzed.
