Summer School: Innovation and Technology Management in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Recent advances in the life sciences have brought about a revolution and transformation of the biotechnology industry. From July, 1 to July, 12 Alma Graduate School will host the intensive program in Innovation and Technology Management in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.

Objectives: Recent advances in the life sciences have brought about a revolution and transformation of the biotechnology industry. From agricultural and environmental to pharmaceutical and healthcare products and services, these industrial sectors represent one of the largest and most steadily growing building blocks of the global economy. Their social impact is overwhelming, generating tremendous progress in quality of life, but also strong reactions that need responsible management based on solid ethical principles. The Summer School in Innovation and Technology Management in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology has been designed to provide students in Biotechnology and Engineering Management with the skills and techniques necessary to face these challenges and seek the business opportunities. This innovative ten-day programme combines general business fundamentals with specific industry knowledge that will help students approach the biotechnology industry.

Target groups: Graduate Students and PhD Students in Biotechnology, Biological Sciences and Management Engineering. Main activities: The course programme will be divided so as to provide both a theoretical and a practical approach from international experts in the specific disciplines. For the practical activities, students will be subdivided into groups to discuss related issues with key managers and organizations within the industry. The program will focus on: biotechnology economics; the management of the innovation process; intellectual property in the life science industry; cell factories and biotechnology companies;regulatory aspects in development of advanced therapy,medicinal products; ethical issues in using tissues from human and animal origin;,entrepreneurship and new firms in high-tech and biotechnology; operations management and logistics in the biotech industry; development, downstream technologies, quality control andassurance for biotechnological products.

Expected outputs: The evaluation at the end of the school, which is necessary to assign the educational credits to each student (5 ECTS), will take into consideration not only the theoretical and practical knowledge gained by each student during the classes, but also their active participation in the planning of the practical exercises.

Learning outcomes: Participants of the Summer School will learn to how develop their individual and managerial skills, acquire a command of management tools and perfect their managerial knowledge of the biotech industry.
