Paolo Barbieri is Assistant Professor of Engineering and Management at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bologna since 2006. His research mainly focuses on the subjects of value system management, with particular attention to make-or-buy choices, mechanisms in the managing of supplier relations and management of international acquisitions. He collaborates with international and national research groups on these subjects, including Michigan State University, Clarkson Business School, EM Lyon and Southern Denmark University. In the past he has worked as a consultant in the acquisitions and supply chain sector. He is graduated in Managerial Engineering in Bologna, and received his doctorate in Managerial Engineering in Padua. His work has been published in the Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, Journal of Public Procurement and others. He is co-author of the book “Supply China Management” (Il Mulino).


This course structure consists of select lectures and three company projects.

LECTURES: In Asian markets companies often use a systematic approach or one that is linked to specific opportunities. In this master we will discuss the strategies of firms and the relationships among the analysis of the Asian market in selecting new markets and commercial strategy for businesses.

COMPANY PROJECTS: The course also includes 3 business projects of 1 month each. The projects are carried out by working in groups of 4-5 participants and begin with the presentation of the company by a manager of a company that is a partner in the School’s network. The manager details to the group the scope of the project. During each project work, participants are assisted by a tutor; at the end of the month there is a meeting with the management and a presentation of the deliverables created by the participants. Teachers and management both provide an assessment, in order to review both the originality of the managerial solutions proposed as well as their practical feasibility and implementation potential in a real life business context.

The goal of this course is to provide participants with the principal topics on operations strategy, organization of production systems and value creation in the supply chain. The main models and techniques of production strategy, supply chain design and strategic management of supplier relationships will be presented. Particular attention will be paid to the management of the production systems in leading enterprises from the region, including the automotive and motorcycle, advanced mechanics and packaging industries.
Speakers include managers and consultants whom are experts on the course’s topics.

Logistics and lean logistics. Supply chain flow. Materials and inventory management (JIT/JIS, MRP, Kanban). Win-win approaches in the management of materials (continuous replenishment, consignment stock). KPIs and dashboard logistics.

The aim of the course is to analyze how value is created through the interactions of a coordinated system of firms. The course will present the main approaches to supply chain strategies and supplier relationship management. It will analyze the phases of purchasing process, including supplier search, selection, negotiation and evaluation.

There will be specific focus on tools for digital management of exchanges and interactions in a supply chain, including e-procurement platforms, electronic auctions, and extranet systems, as well asreferences to real business experiences.

This course focuses on the study of processes required to create value for a final consumer, through the contribution of a network of companies (generally labelled as “supply chain”). Basic as well as more advanced elements of supply chain structure and management, purchasing processes and supplier management will be analysed. Special focus will be devoted to concepts and applications of “digital supply chains.

The course seeks to combine the systemic and process view of operations in  biopmed related industrial sectors and to discuss about the impact of industry 4.0 paradigm and digitalisation  on thecompetitiveness of such industries. Design and operations of systems are modeled and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques implemented using modern technology.
