José de la Torre is co-founder and current Chair of the governing Council of the EMBA Consortium for Global Business Innovation, a collaborative venture of 12 business schools from around the world. He is also a Professor at Bologna Business School, Bologna, Italy. Previously, he was the J.K. Batten Professor in Strategy (now Emeritus) and Founding Dean of the Chapman Graduate School of Business at Florida International University; Professor of International Business Strategy and Department Chair at UCLA’s Anderson School, Los Angeles, California; Professor and Chair of the Strategy Area at INSEAD, France; and on the faculty at Georgia State University. He has held visiting appointments at business schools in Latin America (INCAE, Universidad del Valle and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez), Europe (the Stockholm School of Economics and Theseus Institute), and the U.S. (Georgetown University). Professor de la Torre is the author of over 65 books and articles and more than 30 case studies in the field of international business and strategy. He has written on the management of multinational firms, the relationship between corporate strategy and government policy, and on foreign investment in developing countries. Recent articles have dealt with the structure and efficiency of multi-country operations, the management of international corporate alliances, the determinants of trust in inter-corporate collaborations, global citizenship, and the internationalization of family-owned companies. His research has been published in J. of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Organization Science, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Revue Française de Gestion, J. of Common Market Studies, J. of Trade Law, Economie et Finances, International J. of Forecasting, J. of International Management, California Management Review, Management Research, European Management Review, Management International Review, J. of World Business, and Strategic Management Review, among others. He received his doctorate from the Harvard Business School in 1970, following degrees in aerospace engineering and business administration from the Pennsylvania State University. Prof. de la Torre served as President of the European International Business Association (EIBA) and of the Academy of International Business (AIB) and served on the editorial board of several academic journals. He is a “Fellow” of the AIB, the Strategic Management Society, the Business Association for Latin American Studies, and the International Academy of Management; was a member of the Board of Advisors of the Los Angeles Times; and served on the Executive Committee of the Council of Latin American Schools of Management (CLADEA). In 2013 the International Management Division of the Academy of Management elected him as Distinguished Educator of the Year. In addition to his academic work, Dr. de la Torre served as a Visiting Scholar at the U.S. Department of Commerce and has consulted with many international companies and organizations in Europe, the United States, Japan, and Latin America. He has served as director of a number of international companies based in Mexico, India, and Florida; as well as on the international advisory boards of business schools in France (EDHEC), Italy (BBS), Portugal (ICSTE), Argentina (di Tella), Uruguay (ORT), Cyprus (CIIM) and the USA (Georgetown). He is also a member of the Ashoka Support Network, a global organization aiding social entrepreneurs.
